Braunvieh Breeders Alliance - Southeast
The direction of the National Association has trended away
from the Original Fullblood Braunvieh to a Purebred (commercial)
association, focusing on black and polled genetics. As breeders of
Original Fullblood Braunvieh, we can
appreciate the cross-breeding qualities of the Original Braunvieh with
other carcass breeds such as Angus to create a phenomenal offspring that
excels in the feedlot. However, to change the direction of the organization
to a commercial association focusing on percentage Braunvieh animals is
detrimental to the breed as a whole.
Hundreds of Original Fullblood Braunvieh from Original Swiss
bloodlines have been lost since the inception of Total Herd Reporting that
requires breeders to report all registered animals on a yearly basis and pay
an assessment (tax) on all of these animals. This assessment is paid
whether or not the cow has a calf. First of all, the breeders did not
understand the system or what the assessment (tax) was going to be used
for. Secondly, breeders felt that once an animal was registered, it should
be registered for life. Under the present system, if the assessment (tax)
is not paid, then the registered animal is "dead" and a penalty will have to
be paid to place that animal back on registry. Progeny cannot be registered
unless the assessment (tax) is paid. We feel that once an animal is
registered, it should be registered for life. If you choose to register
progeny from that animal it is your choice. We feel that Total Herd
Reporting has been counterproductive to the expansion of the breed.
Braunvieh Breeders Alliance - Southeast is an alliance of
like-minded individuals who are interested in the preservation and promotion
of the Original Braunvieh breed of cattle. We welcome any breeder whether
you have 2 or 200 head of cattle as long as you are as concerned as we are
about the direction of the National association and want to see a more
positive approach to promotion and record keeping.
The goals of the Braunvieh Breeders Alliance -
Southeast are:
1. To offer an alternative to registration with the
National association.
2. To organize displays of cattle throughout the region to
promote Original Braunvieh.
3. To organize sales as an outlet for seed stock producers
and commercial breeders to sell seed stock, replacement females, etc.
4. To offer an avenue for small producers to come together
in activities to promote the Braunvieh breed of cattle.
We welcome any breeder of Original Fullblood Braunvieh to
contact us to learn more about how we can promote this great breed
throughout the United States. If you are a commercial breeder we welcome
you also to join us in promoting Original Braunvieh.
