Braunvieh translated is "Brown Cow".  The country of origin is Switzerland.  There is documented evidence that the Benedictine Monks started breeding Braunvieh cattle approximately a thousand years ago.  Through consistent breeding practices and natural selection for the harsh environment in which they lived, the Swiss Original Braunvieh evolved into a very hardy breed.

In Switzerland it is important to maintain the purity of the Original Fullblood breed of cattle.  All animals entered into the herd book must prove to be Fullblood.  This is proved with a certificate of descent (pedigree) by the breeder.  Internationally, there are three breed directions recognized and each have their own criteria for breed registration.

1.  Swiss Original Fullblood Braunvieh (100% Fullblood).

2.  Swiss Braunvieh (cross of Original Swiss Fullblood Braunvieh and  Brown Swiss Dairy breed).

3.  Brown Swiss (Developed in the U.S. for milk production)

Characteristics for the ideal Original Braunvieh include the following:

  • Mature females weigh approx. 700Kg. (1500lbs) with a hip height of 133-145cm. (53-57 in.)
  • Mature males weigh approx.   1000-1100Kg. (2200-2400lbs) with a hip height of 140-160cm. (55-62 in.)
  • Animals are structurally sound, have strong bones, are early maturing, and are very docile.
  • Color is brown with white ear hair and white muzzle.  Fullblood Braunvieh are horned.
